A Brooklyn man was sentenced on Wednesday to seven years in prison for stealing more than $3.5 million worth of metal postal service carts and selling them to metal recyclers, officials said.
Aaron Kevin Howard, 53, stole 2,611 containers from the postal service since July 2010, and earned more than $400,000 by selling them to different recycling facilities, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Maryland.
He and his co-defendant, Roland Michael Muir, 57, of Glen Burnie worked at a private mailer in Baltimore. Muir drove a box truck for the company, which they drove to two U.S. Postal Service bulk mail centers in Capitol Heights. They would steal the containers, taken them to a warehouse where they would spray paint over the postal service logos, and then sell them for about $1,300 each, authorities said.
When Muir changed jobs and no longer drove the box truck, authorities said Howard rented one.
Muir pleaded guilty and will be sentenced next week, officials said.
