Man in serious condition after being rescued from Whitemarsh Creek

A man was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center on Sunday after he was pulled from Whitemarsh Creek off the Rhode River at Edgewater, an Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman said.

Paramedics were called to a reported drowning at a waterfront home in the 3900 block of Whitemarsh Lane at 2:10 p.m.

Division Chief Michael Cox said a man in his late 50s or early 60s was out of the water when medical crews arrived. Cox said the man apparently had jumped into the creek to retrieve a bag.

He located the bag and started swimming back to shore when he began showing signs of distress and dipped underwater for about one minute. Bystanders who observed the incident jumped in and pulled the man out the water and took him to the shore, where they began administering CPR. Cox said the man had suffered cardiac arrest and was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center in a serious condition.
