Driver in weekend Shady Side crash dies

The driver of a car that crashed into a utility pole early Saturday in Shady Side has died, Anne Arundel County police said Monday afternoon.

Terry Elvin Potts, 26, of the 100 block of Southbridge Drive in Glen Burnie, was the driver whose Saturn crashed on Shady Side Drive near the intersection with Shadyrest Road shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday. He had been taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Police said they did not know why the car left the roadway. The preliminary investigation indicated that speed may have contributed to the accident, police said.

Police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said there have been 18 fatal crashes so far this year and that Potts was the 18th victim. In 2010 in Anne Arundel County, there were 25 fatal crashes resulting in 27 deaths.
