Arundel man charged after allegedly attacking family

A 25-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and assault after he allegedly stabbed his step-father and choked his mother in their Brooklyn Park home, according to Anne Arundel County police.

Jesse Edward Chapman was arrested and charged Sunday with attempted second-degree murder, several counts of first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, a fourth-degree sex offense, and false imprisonment in connection with the attack, police said in a statement.

At about 1:40 a.m. Sunday, police answered responded to a call of a female screaming for help at a house in the 400 block of Old Riverside Road. There, they found Chapman's 51-year-old step-father suffering several stab wounds to the chest, wrist and shoulders.

Officers concluded from witness statements that Chapman had returned home intoxicated — apparently from a controlled dangerous substance — and allegedly began choking and assaulting his 51-year-old mother before throwing her onto the floor.

Chapman's step-father was awakened by the commotion, and attempted to intervene, when Chapman allegedly obtained a knife from the kitchen and began stabbing his step-father repeatedly.

A female neighbor entered the residence to help, and was also assaulted by Chapman, police said.

Police located Chapman inside the residence and arrested him.

All victims in the attack suffered what appear to be non life-threatening injuries, police said.
