Waterworks Park in Annapolis to reopen next month

An Annapolis park that had been closed for more than year is being reopened to the public.

The Waterworks Park off Defense Highway had been closed by the city to save money and prepare for repairs to an aging dam. But after numerous requests that the city reopen the park, officials looked into low-cost solutions.

Officials say they plan to reopen next month with the help of volunteer rangers. They will also reduce the park's hours.

Public Works Director David Jarrell says the dam has leaks but is safe. Officials haven't decided whether to repair or remove it.

Waterworks Park opened about 20 years ago, and has been used for its hiking trails and three fishing ponds.

Monthly and quarterly permits will go on sale Aug. 15.
