Police: Person changing tire killed in hit-and-run in Anne Arundel; driver in custody on unrelated charges

A Baltimore man was killed in a hit-and-run crash while changing a tire on Interstate 295 in Anne Arundel County on Sunday, police said.

Maryland State Police wrote in a news release that officers were called to the scene of a crash on northbound I-295 near Route 100 around 6:30 p.m.

Police wrote that a commercial bus had parked on the side of the road due to a flat tire and that the passengers had already moved to a different bus to continue their trip.

However, Stuart A. R. Johnson, 41, was changing the tire on the bus was struck by a passing vehicle and the driver did not stop at the scene, police wrote. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police located the driver, identified as Brittany L. Walton, 23, of Hanover, with the help of information from a witness. Walton was arrested on outstanding warrants from Baltimore on animal cruelty and burglary charges, police said. Charges related to the hit and run are pending, police said.
