3-alarm brush fire in Anne Arundel prompts call for explosives unit

An unusual three-alarm brush fire brought fire departments from three jurisdictions to Pasadena on Thursday afternoon, at one point prompting calls for a special explosive unit to respond as well.

The fire involved a debris or compost pile near an "old abandoned warehouse" off Fort Smallwood Road south of the Key Bridge, said Lt. Ariel Jackson, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

It had been brought under control by 5 p.m. but was still giving off significant amounts of smoke, Jackson said.

Unusual fire activity had prompted the call for the Annapolis explosives unit, he said. About 4:45 p.m., he said a "ship flare" had been found amid the debris.

Mutual aid assistance was being provided by the fire departments of Howard County and Baltimore, Jackson said.

About 5 p.m., firefighters were mostly "wetting down" the debris to get it to stop smoking, Jackson said.
