Annapolis Senior Activity Center members can sign up for a trip to Parade Land and Jubilee in the Shenandoah Valley on Oct. 6 and to the Allenberry Dinner Theater in Boiling Springs, Pa., on Oct. 19. The Parade Land trip features a fantasy land of floats and props used in presidential inaugurations, Rose Bowl parades and Macy's Thanksgiving Day parades. The tour will stop for lunch at the Johnny Appleseed Restaurant. Cost of the trip is $85. At the Allenberry Dinner Theater, visitors will see the musical "I Do, I Do" and have a buffet-style meal at the Fairfield Inn. Cost is $78. Information: 410-222-1818.


Quilting demonstration

Sallye Silesky, an adjunct faculty member at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, along with her students, will present a quilting demonstration at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Annapolis Senior Activity Center, 119 S. Villa Ave. Silesky also will teach a quilting class at 9 a.m. Thursdays at the center in the fall. Information: 410-222-1818.

Family day

A Budget Friendly Family Fun Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the South County Senior Activity Center, 27 Stepneys Lane in Edgewater. Event replaces the annual Backyard Carnival previously held at the center and will be more reasonably priced. Entertainment includes the Unicycle Lady. Bus trip

The O'Malley Senior Activity Center is sponsoring a trip to see the musical "Me and My Girl" at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theater in Lancaster, Pa., on Oct. 12. The bus leaves the center at 9:45 a.m. and returns at 5:15 p.m. The cost of $82 includes a buffet lunch. A $25 deposit is required now, with the balance due Sept. 13. Computer classes

"Basic Windows Computer Skill and Knowledge" workshops will be held Wednesdays at the O'Malley Senior Activity Center, 1275 Odenton Road in Odenton. Classes will be held through mid-September. The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has published its 2011-2012 edition of "Services for Seniors, Adults with Disabilities and Caregivers." The directory includes information on rental and housing assistance, legal help, county Social Services benefits and caregiver information. Volunteer grandparents The Foster Grandparents Program of the county Department of Aging and Disabilities seeks volunteer grandparents to mentor children with special needs. Volunteers serve 15 to 40 hours a week, providing mentoring, tutoring, advice and attention. Volunteers also teach life skills to children in special education classes and provide staffing for a homeless shelter, family support center and other agencies. Activities may include reading stories, listening, helping children feed themselves, setting the table, working with puzzles, and helping children learn colors, numbers and the alphabet. Volunteers must be income-eligible and at least 60 years old. Benefits include a tax-free stipend, paid training, vacation, sick leave, free transportation, lunch and a physical exam.
