Trips for 2012

Members of the Annapolis Senior Activity Center can stop by the trip desk for a preview of 2012 outings and make reservations and deposits. Trips include "Journey of Hope" to Gettysburg, Pa., and a visit to Washington to see the cherry blossoms, followed by a luncheon cruise. Information: 410-222-1818.


Tax assistance

Trained volunteers will be available through April 5 at the O'Malley Senior Activity Center, 1275 Odenton Road in Odenton, to assist seniors with federal and state tax preparation. Appointments are available Monday-Friday. Information: 410-222-6227.


Residents' rights

Brochures on residents' rights in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities and another brochure on the ombudsman program protecting those residents are available from the Department of Aging and Disabilities. The brochures are titled "Resident's Rights in Nursing Homes/Rehabilitation Centers in Maryland," "Resident's Rights in Assisted Living Facilities in Maryland" and "Ombudsman: Your Resident Advocate." Senior services

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has published its 2011-2012 edition of "Services for Seniors, Adults with Disabilities and Caregivers." The directory includes information on rental and housing assistance, legal help, county social services benefits and caregiver information. Free copies are available at the department's headquarters, 2666 Riva Road, fourth floor, Annapolis; the seven senior activity centers; county libraries; at CVS, Food Lion and WaWa stores; and online at http://www.aacounty.org/aging. Senior housing

Information on assisted-living homes and other housing options for seniors has been updated on the county Department of Aging and Disabilities website at http://www.aacounty.org/aging.


The following activities will be offered at the Annapolis Senior Activity Center, 119 S. Villa Ave. Information: 410-222-1818:

Fair A multicultural fair will be held from 10 a.m. to noon March 13. Participants can learn about different countries and cultures, including their food, artifacts, history and native dress.

Jazz Project Natale performs smooth jazz at 12:30 p.m. March 14.

Party A St. Patrick's Day party will be held at 12:30 p.m. March 19. Pet Rock performs oldies, classics, country and blues. Refreshments will be served.

Bird talk A naturalist from the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary will talk about the diversity of birds at the sanctuary at 10 a.m. March 20.

Sing-along Bill Sharkey will host a musical memories sing-along from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 14. Free.

Movie Screening of "The Help," one of the nominated films for best picture at this year's Oscars, will be shown at noon March 22. Cost is $2 and includes popcorn, snacks and drinks. Sign up by March 20.

Scrabble Challenge your brain by playing Scrabble, 12:45 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays. New participants are welcome.

Memoir writing A course on autobiographical writing meets from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays. There will be an opportunity to learn listening and interviewing skills, writing tips and proofreading. Registration required.

Vaccine Nurses from the MedStar Health Visiting Nurse Association will administer the shingles vaccine from 9 a.m. to noon March 15. Vaccine is covered under Medicare Part D and select commercial insurance.

Bus trip Reservations are being taken for a visit to the Showboat Casino on April 17. The bus leaves at 7:45 a.m. and returns at 8:30 p.m. Cost is $30 and includes a $25 free play.

Health insurance A representative from the Senior Health Insurance Program is available by appointment to discuss health insurance concerns at the Arnold Senior Activity Center. Appointments and information: 410-222-1922.

Workshop Financial adviser Tim Laur presents "Foundations of Investing" at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 6. This is the second in a series of five free workshops being held at the center. The series continues on March 13, 20, and 27. Investing, mutual funds and retirement are among the topics to be discussed.

Nutrition program Amy Allen-Chabot, associate professor of nutrition and biology at Anne Arundel Community College, will give a presentation, "Diet and Cancer," at 10 a.m. Monday, March 5. Free.

Variety show Douglas Everton performs at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 6. Free.

Cancer program Joanne Ebner, RN, director of outreach and wellness at Anne Arundel Medical Center's Cancer Institute, will talk on "Cancer Prevention and Early Detection" at 10 a.m. March 19. She will also suggest screenings for seniors. Free.

Flea market The center will hold its semiannual "Big Spring Flea Market" from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 23. Free and open to the public.

Concert In celebration of St. Patrick's Day, violinist-mandolinist Alan Oresky performs at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13. Green treats will be provided.

'Ask the Undertaker' Ryan Helfenbein continues the series at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, March 14. His topic is "Unveiling the Undertaker," and will cover costs involved with cremation and funeral services, casket shopping, veteran burial benefits, embalming requirements if any, and contracts with funeral homes.

Quilt Club Participants can help one another with projects and learn ideas and techniques every Friday at 1 p.m. at the O'Malley Annex. Machines are available. New members welcome.

Workshops A smocking workshop, led by Black Eyed Susan Smocking Guild members, Jeri Kelley and Ann Hall, will be held from 10 a.m. to noon March 7 and 14 at the center. Class and kit fee is $10. No smocking experience required. Cash payment is due at registration.

Exercise session Louise Mulvey will host an hourlong informational session at 9:30 a.m. March 13 about how to exercise safely. She will demonstrate equipment use and answer questions at a fitness room orientation. Group size is limited.


Sing-along To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, Bill Sharkey will host a sing-along of Irish music at 12:30 p.m. March 16. Participants are encouraged to wear green. Light refreshments will be served.


Movie The Woody Allen comedy "Midnight in Paris," featuring Owen Wilson and Marion Cotillard, will be shown at 12:15 p.m. March 23. The film was a nominee for best picture at this year's Academy Awards.
