Board members to take oath

Teresa Milio Birge of Odenton, Andrew Pruski of Gambrills and Else Drooff of Arnold will be sworn in as members of the Anne Arundel Board of Education at a ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday at the county courthouse in Annapolis.

Pruski has been appointed to his first full term as an at-large member of the board. He has served on the board since August 2009, when he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Tricia Johnson, who vacated her seat when she was appointed to the County Council.

Birge has been reappointed to her second five-year term on the board. She served as board vice president in 2010-2011 and 2012-2013.

Drooff, a rising senior at Broadneck High School, was appointed as the 40th student member to serve on the board. She succeeds Nick Lefavor of Old Mill High.

All three will take part in the board's first meeting of the 2013-2014 school year, scheduled for Wednesday, July 10.

Dyslexia discussion

Dr. Joan Mele-McCarthy, head of the Summit School in Edgewater, will present a discussion on the history, diagnosis and defining differences, and plan of educational action for those with dyslexia from 8:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, at the school, 664 E. Central Ave. Topics include:

•What are the symptoms of dyslexia?

•When is it appropriate to assess for learning differences?

•What causes dyslexia?

•What should an academic program include?

Engineering scholarships

Anne Arundel Community College has been awarded a $598,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to help support the college's Engineering Scholars Program. The grant will provide scholarships of up to $4,000 annually to financially needy, academically talented students to help them graduate from the school's engineering programs, transfer to a four-year institution and enter the workforce. Internship program

Anne Arundel Community College is seeking employers to participate in its internship program. Students get real-world experience and mentoring from leaders in business, industry, government and nonprofit agencies and organizations. Nursing scholarships

Through 2014, three Anne Arundel Community College nursing students will receive $3,000 scholarships through a program set up by Johns Hopkins HealthCare. The scholarships will benefit county residents enrolled in the college's registered nursing associate's degree program who demonstrate financial need as established by the AACC financial aid office.
