Archive interns
The Maryland State Archives is accepting applications for its summer student intern program. Internships are open to high school and undergraduate- or graduate-level college students attending Maryland schools or Maryland residents attending out-of-state schools. These are paid internships that include experience and training in archival records management, digital imaging and historical research methods. The 10-week program runs June 6-Aug. 14.
Qualifications include academic excellence, preferably with an interest in history, archival science, library science, computer science, American studies, African-American studies, museum studies or related fields. For information and application details go to msa.md.gov/msa/educ/html/interns.html.
Applications must be postmarked on or before April 2, and applicants will be notified of decisions by April 30. In addition to the paid summer program, student internships are available for academic or community service credit throughout the year.
Camps for disabled
The Commission on Disability Issues encourages parents of youth ages 5 to 21 with disabilities to attend a Summer Camp Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Severna Park High School, 60 Robinson Road. Staff members from the Bureau of Recreation and Parks will be available to discuss opportunities in the department's Adaptive Day Camps and Summer Fun Centers. The fair will also showcase the department's other summer programs.
Early camp registration will be available for those attending the fair; $75 will hold a registration with a check or money order made payable to Anne Arundel County. Online and mail-in registration will be available Feb. 15.
Youth volunteer options are available for those entering seventh through ninth grades. The Volunteer Summer Serve Program will provide middle school students with the opportunity to be peer mentors to youths with disabilities at the Adaptive Day Camps. Applications are due by May 4. Light House fundraiser
Heritage Baptist Church will host its sixth annual SOUPer Bowl Lunch for the Annapolis Light House Shelter from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at 1740 Forest Drive in Annapolis. Guest servers include House of Delegates Michael E. Busch and Annapolis city council members Fred Paone, Shelia Finlayson and Classie Hoyle. Restaurant week
The annual Annapolis Restaurant Week takes place Feb. 20-26. Forty-one restaurants will offer two-course, fixed-priced lunches for $15.95 and three-course, fixed-price dinners for $32.95. For the first time, fixed-price breakfast for $12.95 will be offered at Metropolitan Kitchen and Miss Shirley's Cafe. Call for artists
Artists of all ages who have disabilities and are county residents are invited to submit artwork to the 2012 Artists With Disabilities Art Exhibit. The showing will feature more than 20 works. An opening-night reception will be held April 19 at the Arundel Center, 44 Calvert St. in Annapolis. Selected artwork will be on display through June 15.
Entry procedures and application forms are available at the Disability Commission's website at aacounty.org/aging/disabledadults/commdis.cfm. Up to three works may be entered. Fiesta
Asbury Town Neck United Methodist Church, 429 Asbury Drive in Severna Park, will host a Pre-Super Bowl Fiesta on Sunday, Jan. 29, after the 10 a.m. worship service. The fiesta will include a buffet of Super Bowl favorites with desserts, a chili cook-off, hot wing cook-off, Ravens-Steelers trivia face-off, Super Bowl playoff winner's face-off and games. Comedian Sam "The Juice" Crowder performs at halftime. All are invited and are encouraged to wear their team's jersey and colors. Information: 410-647-3461.
'Good Bugs, Bad Bugs'
The Annapolis Horticulture Society meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, at St. Anne's Parish Hall, 199 Duke of Gloucester St. in Annapolis. Michael Raupp speaks on "Good Bugs and Bad Bugs." Oyster roast
The second-annual Annapolis Oyster Roast and Sock Burning will take place from noon to 4 p.m. March 24 at the Annapolis Maritime Museum, 723 Second St. General admission is $25; $5 per child 13-18; free for children 12 and younger; VIP admission is $40 per adult and includes a commemorative T-shirt and special oyster dish tastings from competing area restaurants. Rotary Club gala
Tickets are on sale for the Rotary Club of Annapolis' annual Black Tie and Diamonds event March 3 at the Westin Annapolis Hotel on Westgate Circle in Annapolis. Gala includes a cocktail hour, silent and live auctions, a raffle, dinner and dancing to the music of NightLife. Tickets are $150 per person, $1,500 for a table of 10. Capitol Steps
Tickets are on sale for a performance by the Capitol Steps, a musical theater troupe from Washington, being held at St. John's College in Annapolis to raise money for student aid. The show includes a review of songs and spoofs that make fun of public figures across party lines. The performance, followed by a reception, will be held at 8 p.m. March 3 in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium, 60 College Ave. Tickets are $55 in advance; $60 at the door ($35 tax deductible). Register your bike
The Annapolis Police Department is sponsoring a bicycle registration program. The owner's name, address, phone number and the bike's serial number, manufacturer and color are recorded in the department's database. Registration is available to any Annapolis resident. Neighborhood associations should contact Medley if they want to hold a community registration.
Police Explorers
The Annapolis Police Department Law Enforcement Explorer Post 199 is accepting applications. Law Enforcement Exploring is a program for those who have completed eighth grade and are 14 to 20 years old. The program offers information on career activities. Meetings are 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at police headquarters, 199 Taylor Ave. in Annapolis. Information: 410-268-9000 or at the office.
Fingerprinting service
The Annapolis Police Department offers a fingerprinting service at 199 Taylor Ave. from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Service is also available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the first Saturday of the month. The fee is $5 per fingerprint card, and the person being printed must supply the cards. Check or money order only. Tours of historic house
The Ann Arundel County Historical Society has opened the historic Benson-Hammond House and North Browse and Buy Shoppe at Aviation Boulevard and Andover Road in Linthicum for the season. Tours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. Group tours are by appointment. The Kuethe Library for Historical and Genealogical Research, 5 Crain Highway S.E., operated jointly with the Anne Arundel Genealogical Society, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays year-round.
