The Y of Central Maryland will operate its first family center in Anne Arundel beginning Sept. 19 when it converts the Big Vanilla Athletic Club in Arnold into the Greater Annapolis Family Center Y.
Terms of the purchase from LAR LLC, owners of Big Vanilla, were not disclosed. A spokeswoman for the Y said staff of the 80,000-square-foot Arnold health and fitness club, about 200 employees total, will be offered positions with the Y.
Big Vanilla has about 9,000 members at the Arnold location, and all memberships will be honored by the Y, the spokeswoman said.
In addition to the Arnold site, Big Vanilla operates another club in Pasadena. Owner Larry Ray will continue to operate that site, according to a press release from the Y. As for the Y takeover of the Arnold location, Ray said in the release, "I know that I am leaving the business I built in the hands of an organization that will do good for the community."
The Y has summer camps and before- and after-school programs in Anne Arundel, but has not previously operated a family center in the county. Family centers typically provide daily health and wellness activities, weekly classes and programs for all ages.
Michelle Reedy, who has served as a director at Y family centers in Ellicott City in Howard County, and Parkville and Perry Hall in Baltimore County, has been named district executive director for the Annapolis center.
