The inmate who walked off of a work detail near Annapolis on Tuesday night was captured in Southwest Baltimore Wednesday night, state corrections officials said.
Elwood Veney, 33, was picked up by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services' Warrant Apprehension Unit at about 7 p.m. Wednesday. Detectives in the unit were able to track Veney to a shopping center where he was arrested, said Mark Vernarelli, a state corrections spokesman. Vernarelli said he could not reveal what led detectives to the shopping center.
Before he escaped, Veney had last been seen shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday at the State Highway Administration building at 130 Defense Highway. He was running toward the Westfield Annapolis mall.
At nearby Rolling Knolls Elementary School, police were brought in to supervise the afternoon dismissal on Tuesday. After-school activities were held indoors.
Veney was serving a five-year sentence without parole at the Jessup Pre-Release Unit for robbery with a deadly weapon and firearm possession.
On Thursday, Veney was being held in Baltimore, where he will be classified to a higher security level before being sent to a facility. He no longer will be allowed to work on outside work details, Vernarelli said.
Any decision on criminal charges related to Veney's escape will be decided in concert with prosecutors, Vernarelli said.
