A Prince George's County police officer was charged with allegedly stealing an iPad from a customer at Annapolis Mall, Anne Arundel County police said Saturday.
Temitope Asaya, who was off duty at the time of the alleged theft, was suspended with pay pending an administrative hearing, Prince George's County police said. He has been an officer there for four years and was assigned to the patrol division.
Anne Arundel police said a woman accidentally left her iPad on a display counter at the Apple store in Annapolis Mall on Sept. 12, and later returned to the store to discover it was missing. Surveillance footage from the store showed a man and a woman looking at the iPad near the door and standing near it, police said. The man then walked away while the woman picked up the iPad, and the two exited the store with the woman holding the iPad.
Police said they identified the man as Asaya, 30, and the woman as Tykina Marie Anderson, 24, of Capitol Heights. Both were charged with theft under $1,000.
Asaya allegedly contacted the woman who owned the iPad after she placed it into "lost" mode, which allows the screen to display a phone number and requests the finder to return the device. He told her the iPad had been purchased on Craigslist and tried to arrange a meeting, but did not show up, police said.
