Eleven students at Annapolis High School have been disciplined after an inappropriate picture of a classmate was circulated via text message and social media, school officials said.
After school on Monday, a school administrator was alerted to a social media posting involving a student that had an inappropriate message underneath it, said Bob Mosier, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Public School System.
By Tuesday morning, the school's investigation determined that one student took a picture of another student without their knowledge. The picture and an inappropriate message was then texted to other students and made its way onto social media, Mosier said.
Mosier said he could not provide any details about the picture or the message.
On Tuesday, 11 students were disciplined for their involvement, Mosier said.
In Anne Arundel, punishments for cyberbullying can range from detention to expulsion for high school students, depending on the nature of the incident, according to the system's student handbook.
"This is an issue that we as a system and our schools take very seriously, as evidenced by the quickness with which Annapolis High School administrators conducted this investigation," Mosier said.
