Neuman to create Arundel transportation commission

Anne Arundel County Executive Laura Neuman plans to form a commission to study transportation issues in the county.

Over the next six months, commission members will be charged with making recommendations for how to improve transportation programs in the county.

Neuman said that county residents seem to be "conflicted" about how to improve transportation and transit. She hopes the commission will come up with "thoughtful recommendations."

"If you have folks at the table and they have a say in the process, then ultimately any decisions that are made have the buy-in of the community," Neuman said.

A proposal has been floated to combine bus systems in Howard County and Anne Arundel County -- including the cities of Laurel and Annapolis -- to save money and create a more efficient system.

The Annapolis City Council, meanwhile, is considering a resolution to support non-binding negotiations on a regional bus service.

County residents who are interested in serving on Neuman's commission should send a letter of interest and a resume to George Cardwell at pzcard44@aacounty.org by Aug. 1. The only requirements are that commission members must be 18 years old and be willing "to make a substantial time commitment over the next four to six months."
