Athletes of the Week: Mazhi Thames (Meade) and Harley Herndon (South River)


Mazhi Thames, Sr., Meade, basketball

Thames scored 73 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and handed out 13 assists and led the Mustangs to three wins last week. He capped his week with a 30-point, 12-assist, seven-rebound performance in Friday’s win over North County.

“Mazhi is a great teammate and has provided tremendous leadership to such a young and inexperienced team making his teammates better every day,” coach Mike Glick said.

Honorable Mention

Trenton Puccinelli, Sr., South River/Ka’Ron Lewis, Sr., South River, wrestling

Puccinelli and Lewis both went 8-0 at the LaPlata Duals over the weekend.


Harley Herndon, Soph., South River, basketball

Herndon led the Seahawks to three wins last week, including a pair where they had to come from behind. She scored 20 points, including 13 in the second half, and helped her team rally from a 13-point deficit to defeat Reservoir on Wednesday.

“She was clutch when the game mattered the most,” coach Mike Zivic said.

Honorable Mention

Sydney Faulcon, Sr., Old Mill, basketball

Faulcon scored 17 points on 8 for 12 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds in Friday’s victory over Chesapeake.
