Eleven people have applied to fill a seat on the Anne Arundel County Board of Education left vacant when District 30 representative Maria Sasso resigned in July.
The district includes Annapolis and Edgewater. The term will expire in December 2020.
The 13-member School Board Appointment Commission will interview the candidates in the coming weeks, a schools spokeswoman said, but the schedule has not been released yet. The interviews are open to the public.
Applications from each candidate are available on the school system’s website, including background information and statements on critical issues.
The vacancy — and the need to fill it — comes as the board is transitioning from appointed to elected.

Right now the board is made up of eight adult representatives from state legislative districts. By December 2020, the new board will have seven members, one from each district in the county. There is one student member now and that won’t change. Anne Arundel’s student member is the only student board member in the state with full voting rights.
This November voters in districts 1, 4, 5 and 7 can cast a ballot and decide who will represent them for a term that extends to 2024. In November 2020, representatives from the remaining districts will be elected to four-year terms.
In 2024, school board elections will occur for all seven districts.
The appointment commission has already convened once this year to fill a vacant seat in District 32 — they selected Sidney Butcher — and depending on the results of the election in November their services could be called on again.
