Accidental house fire in Riva displaces 9 people, fire department says

Nine people were displaced from a house in Riva after an accidental fire broke out in the attic Tuesday afternoon, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said.

Firefighters responded to a two-story, single-family dwelling at 3092 Sussex Place around 2:10 p.m. and reported a one-alarm fire “evident from the attic and roof area,” according to a news release. Anne Arundel County firefighters and assisting fire departments brought the flames under control in about 20 minutes.

Three occupants who were home at the time were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported, officials said. A total of nine occupants were displaced as a result of the fire.

The Anne Arundel County Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit determined the fire originated in the attic area and is believed to be accidental. The cause is still under investigation.

Thirty-four firefighters from three departments responded to the fire. Annapolis Fire Department and Naval Support Activity Annapolis Fire Department also assisted. Other assisting agencies included the Anne Arundel County Police Department and Baltimore Gas and Electric Co.

The estimated damage to the home is $75,000.
