The Annapolis Police Department received two bulletproof vests Thursday from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation at the Annapolis location of Firehouse Subs.
The vests, valued at $4,006, will protect officers in the line of duty during hostile emergency situations.
Riverdale Park Police Department was also awarded $20,917 to fund the purchase of 20 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and accessories.
Firehouse Subs co-founders, Chris Sorensen and Robin Sorensen, traveled to Mississippi where they fed first responders and survivors in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. They then founded the foundation in 2005 with the mission to provide funding, lifesaving equipment and educational opportunities to first responders and public safety organizations.
To raise money for the foundation, Firehouse Subs restaurants participate in a number of fundraising efforts. The nonprofit has granted more than $46 million to hometown heroes in 49 states, Puerto Rico and Canada, including over $716,000 in Maryland, foundation officials said.
