Community support grants reopen for nonprofits helping meet the needs of Anne Arundel residents during COVID

Applications for the Community Support Grant Program — which are designed to help nonprofits in Anne Arundel County — are now open again.

This year, priority will be given to nonprofits responding directly to increased community needs created by the COVID-19 pandemic, those that lost revenue due to the pandemic and those that serve underprivileged populations, the county said.

The grant program started during the first budget under County Executive Steuart Pittman’s leadership after he was elected in 2018.

“It’s one of the programs I’m most proud of in our administration,” Pittman said.

Last year’s program generated more than $1.8 million in loans for 52 local organizations, and Pittman said he’s aiming for a similar outcome from this year’s program.

Arundel Community Development Services Inc. will review applicants and facilitate the giving of the grants.

“We are excited we can help the county build the capacity of our community partners who are providing much needed services for our residents,” said Erin Karpewicz, ACDS executive director.

As for what kinds of groups are eligible, Karpewicz said any nonprofits that improve the community should apply — that could be organizations that help residents get their GEDs, job skills training programs, nonprofits centered around helping people with disabilities and their families and more.

“It was very important to our administration that it support the nonprofits that are supporting the most vulnerable among us,” Pittman said. “They provide services to the people who need them most in the places that it’s needed most, and they do it efficiently, often more efficiently than government can do it and closer to the residents.”

The grants are subject to approval by the Anne Arundel County Council as it reviews the fiscal 2023 budget.

Applications will be open through Feb. 21 on the ACDS website.
