Emergency responders took a man and a woman to shock trauma after they were seriously injured when their car crashed into a tree along Ritchie Highway in Arnold late Tuesday morning, Anne Arundel County fire officials said.

Firefighters and paramedics responded to the 1400 block of Ritchie Highway after receiving a call around 11:40 a.m. for a single-vehicle collision involving a tree, said Capt. Russ Davies, fire spokesman.

Davies said those first on the scene of the southbound span between Joyce Lane and Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard found that a Honda sedan had collided with a tree.

The occupants — an 18-year-old woman and man, estimated to be in his 20s — were trapped, Davies said, and it took fire crews about 10 minutes to free them.

Davies said he had not yet been informed who was driving.

Paramedics summoned a Maryland State Police helicopter for the man, who sustained critical and life-threatening injuries in the crash, Davies said.

He said the helicopter landed at Arnold Park and flew the man to shock trauma in Baltimore.

Paramedics drove the woman to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Davies said. Her injuries were classified as serious, but not life-threatening.
