From commanding the escort to taking Lady Gaga’s arm, Biden’s inauguration included Anne Arundel

President Joe Biden may be Delaware’s favorite son, but his inauguration had several Anne Arundel County connections.

From leading the presidential escort to heading the National Guard’s Task Force Capitol, current and former county residents were part of the historic event.

As the newly sworn-in president, one of Joe Biden’s first tasks was to inspect his troops. Brig. Gen. Robert Bowie, deputy commanding general inauguration for the United States Northern Command Joint Task Force National Capital Region/Military District of Washington, led the presidential escort.

Bowie graduated from Andover High School in 1983 and attended Carnegie Mellon University. Andover High in Linthicum was merged in 1990 with Brooklyn Park High School to form North County High.

Upon graduation, Bowie commissioned into the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and served as a civil engineer in the Air Force, according to a National Guard biography. After 12 years of active duty service, he became part of the Air National Guard.

Bowie led the escort past Biden and first lady Jill Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff.

In between the two couples was Maj. Gen. Omar Jones IV, commanding general of the Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region, Military District of Washington. Fort George G. Meade is one of the bases in the Military District of Washington.

Leading the National Guard’s Task Force Capitol, which assisted with the security of the Capitol area after the insurrection on Jan. 6 through the inauguration, was another Anne Arundel County resident.

Brig. Gen. Janeen Birckhead commanded troops from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Virginia and Delaware.

Also in attendance were members of the Army Field Band, which is stationed at Fort Meade. The band, like the Maryland National Guard, are staples at inaugurations.

Lady Gaga, who performed the National Anthem, gathered attention following her performance for her outfit, but it was the Marine on her arm that caught the attention of Chesapeake High School staff.

The marine was Capt. Evan Campbell, who graduated from Chesapeake High School in 2008. He then attended the Naval Academy, where he played on the football team, and graduated in 2013.
