Pet owners in Anne Arundel can join text message program to find lost animals

Pet owners can now text when they have lost their pet through an Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control program and be guided through the process of finding them, looking on local shelters’ websites.

Thanks to the financial support of Friends of Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control, Inc. animal control announced Tuesday, the program kicked off during the coronavirus pandemic when they work to minimize the number of animals coming into the shelter.

The automated text messaging program called Lost2Found, allows owners to opt in by texting the word LOSTPET to 56525, and they are guided through the entire process of finding a lost pet, from links to view animals on local shelters’ websites to in-depth video tutorials.

When a finder opts in by texting the word FOUNDPET to 56525, they are shown the proper methods of helping get a lost pet get home, the laws regarding found pets and the process for becoming a potential adopter if the pet’s owner isn’t found, the release said.

Msg and data rates may apply, up to 15 messages per month. Reply STOP to 56525 to cancel at anytime.

Owners who lose a pet or community members who find a pet can file a report on Anne Arundel County’s website with pictures so owners and finders can make matches, the release said. If the owner of a found pet isn’t found within 24 hours, the pet by law should be brought to Animal Care & Control’s facility the centralized location for all owners of lost pets to look for their pet.

One of the biggest problem’s owners face is lack of knowledge, a release said. The average person who loses a pet doesn’t have knowledge of lost pet behavior, evidence-based strategies, or which shelters are nearby, often causing them to either give up their search.
