Accident snarls traffic on Bay Bridge

Traffic was snarled more than 51/2 hours Saturday afternoon after a tractor-trailer overturned on the westbound span of the Bay Bridge.

The tractor-trailer rear-ended two cars and overturned. One of the cars was severely damaged. Seven people were involved in the crash, but none were seriously injured, according to Lt. Craig Oldershaw of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

A fuel tank started leaking as crews tried to right the tractor-trailer, and hazmat teams had to empty the fuel had to start emptying the tank of at least 100 gallons of diesel fuel that might have gone over the bridge.

The fuel spill needed to be cleaned before the tractor-trailer could be removed, said Sgt. Jonathan Green of the Maryland Transportation Authority, the agency that administers the bridge. "It's turned into a complicated process," Green said.

The span had been reopened by about 8:30 p.m.
