About 17,000 Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. customers lost power for about an hour on Monday afternoon after an unexpected problem occurred at a substation in the Mount Washington area of Northwest Baltimore, according to a company spokeswoman.
The unexpected and still unidentified problem, which is under investigation, occurred with one piece of equipment at the substation about noon, at the same time another, similar piece of equipment had been taken offline and de-energized for routine maintenance, according to Rachael Lighty, the spokeswoman.
The dual pieces of equipment serve the same customers and back each other up in cases of an outage or if there is a problem with one, Lighty said. But without either piece energized, the substation ceased powering those customers served by it in Baltimore and parts of Baltimore County, Lighty said.
"It's really rare when that happens, especially when we're talking outside of storm activity," she said.
Most customers were expected to have power restored by 1 p.m. Lighty said the company is still working to determine what caused the problem.
If customers experience ongoing problems, it may be unrelated to the substation, and they can call BGE at 877-778-2222, Lighty said.
