Authorities are trying to determine what caused a small plane crash that killed a Maryland man not far from a central Pennsylvania airport.
The York County coroner's office identified the pilot killed in Sunday afternoon's crash as 56-year-old Douglas Helms of Westminster. Helms left an airport in Frederick around 11 a.m. and crashed less than two hours later, Deputy Coroner Onalee Gilbert said.
Helms' single-engine Piper PA-28 crashed in a Jackson Township cornfield about a mile short of the runway at York Airport. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
It was the second fatal crash near the airport in a little more than a month. A California man died when his plane crashed nearby following a cross-country flight on Dec. 22.
