N.J. man arrested with 350 pounds of marijuana

A New Jersey man stopped by a state trooper in Worcester County was arrested on drug charges after more than 350 pounds of marijuana were found in the van he was driving, officials said Friday.

Donald P. Gayle, 54, of New Brunswick, N.J., was stopped by a state trooper for failing to move over into an available lane when passing the officer's patrol car near Berlin on the Eastern Shore, police said. Gayle was southbound on Route 113 north of Germantown Road on Sunday afternoon when he was stopped, according to Maryland State Police.

The trooper became suspicious during the stop and called for a drug dog team, which led officers to search the van, police said. They found five large duffle bags, each containing three large cellophane-wrapped packages of suspected marijuana, according to police.

Gayle was arrested and charged with importing a controlled substance and drug possession. He was incarcerated in the Worcester County Detention Center on a $650,000 bond.
