Police officer, 2 others hurt in Howard Co. crash

Three people, including a Howard County police officer were injured in a crash in Mount Airy early Sunday.

Maryland State Police say the officer was interviewing a man on Route 144 when they were hit by a passing car.

Police say the officer, 43-year-old Richard Romberger Jr., had taken 27-year-old Matthew Griffis of Clarksburg into custody after he earlier left the scene of a crash on Penn Shop Road. The two were standing in the eastbound lane when a car driven by Ricky Epperson, 25, of Mount Airy hit two cruisers — which had their lights on — and the two men.

All three men were flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

The Carroll County State's Attorney's Office will review the state police investigation before charges are filed.
