Driver heads wrong way on I-70, crashes head-on, leaving one dead

A 38-year-old Catonsville man was driving the wrong way on Interstate 70 in Howard County early Friday when he hit a 1998 Buick Regal head-on, leaving the Regal's driver dead, police said.

Timothy Constantinides, 28, of the 26000 block of Grace Court in Damascus, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 1:15 a.m., Maryland State Police said.

Criminal and traffic charges are pending, according to police.

Police said Taurence McDonald, of the 600 block of Lucky Leaf Circle, was driving a 2007 Dodge Dakota pickup truck when the truck he was driving hit Constantinides' Buick near the Maryland State Police West Friendship scale house.

According to a preliminary investigation, McDonald and a female passenger, also of 600 block of Lucky Leaf Circle, were driving to Catonsville from a friend's house in Reisterstown when he became disoriented and began driving east in the westbound lane of I-70 when the crash occurred.

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Westbound I-70 was closed for about four hours after the crash.

An investigation continues.
