Baltimore man sentenced to 25 years for death of 2-year-old daughter

An East Baltimore man was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison for beating his 2-year-old daughter to death with a leather belt, prosecutors said.

Tyrone Hamber, 24, of the 2000 block of E. Hoffman St., admitted to hitting Melonie Hamber until she was unconscious before calling for assistance in April 2010, according to a statement Tuesday afternoon from the Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office.

Hamber pleaded guilty in October 2011 to child abuse resulting in death. At his sentencing hearing Friday, Hamber attempted to withdraw his guilty plea.

Baltimore City Circuit Judge Wanda K. Heard denied Hamber's motion to withdraw his plea and sentenced him to the maximum prison term under the sentencing guidelines in his case.
