Eric Phillips, 23, was sentenced in Baltimore City Circuit Court to life in prison with all but 50 years suspended after pleading guilty to the first-degree murder and robbery last year of Antonio Miranda, according to a statement from prosecutors.
Around midnight on April 11, 2011, Phillips attacked Miranda with a brick in an alley in the 3800 block of S. Hanover St. in Brooklyn while attempting to rob him, prosecutors said.
According to the statement, he then stabbed Miranda repeatedly with two knives, killing him. Autopsy results showed that Miranda had suffered 12 stab wounds to the head, chest and lungs, 70 cuts to his arms and hands, and blunt force trauma to his face.
DNA analysis also showed there was blood from the victim and the defendant on both knives, which city police retrieved from the alley along with a brick fragment.
A witness stated that Phillips had confessed to her that he had struck and stabbed the victim and stole his wallet, prosecutors said.
Judge Barry Williams also sentenced Phillips to a concurrent 20 years in prison for the charge of robbery with a deadly weapon and five years of supervised probation.
