Elkton woman faces jail for giving teen abortion pill

An Elkton woman may face prison time for giving an abortion pill ordered from an overseas website to a pregnant 16-year-old girl.

Sixty-two-year-old Sandra Craine pleaded guilty last month to reckless endangerment as part of a deal with Cecil County prosecutors. A second-degree child abuse charge was dropped.

Prosecutors say Craine gave a packet of RU-486, a drug used to induce abortion in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, to the teen, who was 20 weeks pregnant. They say the pills came in packaging that stated that they should be used only under a doctor's supervision. Hours later, prosecutors say the teen delivered the baby, which died.

Craine faces up to five years in prison at sentencing on Feb. 13.
