Police: Woman struck, killed by SUV after apparently running from fire

A 55-year-old woman was struck and killed by a sport utility vehicle in Anne Arundel County Monday night, after apparently running from the area of a nearby fire, police said.

Cheryl Ann Howes, of the 5700 block of Blaine Road in Churchton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police were called at 8:53 p.m. to the area of 5501 Muddy Creek Road in Churchton for a collision involving a pedestrian. There, officers learned that a 2005 Chevy Tahoe, driven by James Turner, 64, of the 5900 block of Sneed Drive in Deale, had been traveling south when it stuck Howes who had run into the roadway.

Investigation revealed that a camper trailer fire had been reported at nearby 5502 Muddy Creek Road, police said, and Howes was observed running from that area where she was staying.

Police detectives and fire investigators are seeking to determine whether the fire was connected to the collision and if foul play was involved, officers said.
