Truck crash shuts down I-83 in Pennsylvania

Interstate 83 in Pennsylvania just north of the Maryland state line was shut down in both directions for most of Saturday after a truck hauling liquid oxygen rolled over, officials said.

The truck overturned on an exit ramp on the northbound side of the highway near Springfield Township at 5:49 a.m., according to Trooper Brent D. Miller of the Pennsylvania State Police. The truck driver suffered minor injuries.

The highway was closed for most of the day in both directions, said Greg Penny, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The northbound lanes were closed between Exit 4 in Shrewsbury and Exit 10 in Loganville, while the southbound lanes were closed between Shrewsbury and Exit 14 in Leader Heights. Traffic was diverted to local side roads.

The southbound lanes were reopened about 4:15 p.m. One northbound lane was reopened at about 4:30 p.m., but the truck was still on its side in the roadway, Penny said.
