A Hagerstown man has been charged with crashing a stolen luxury car into a tree at a Washington County park, Maryland State Police said.

Benjamin Frederick Nelson, 28, was charged Sunday with auto theft, driving under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance and negligent driving, among other charges, authorities said.

Troopers responded to a vehicle collision at Devil's Backbone County Park about 7:45 p.m. Sunday, police said. The driver had crashed a Jaguar into a tree and left the scene, police said. While investigating the accident, officers received a report that the vehicle had been stolen, according to police.

Officers found Nelson walking along U.S. Route 40 and arrested him, police said. He was charged after being treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.
