Investigators look at space heaters in probe of deadly Cumberland fire

A family in Cumberland was using oil-filled space heaters to heat a house that burned over the weekend, killing three women, investigators said.

Gas to the residence was shut off two weeks prior to the blaze because a wall-mounted gas space heater was leaking, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The victims were using electric, oil-filled space heaters to stay warm until the gas unit could be repaired, investigators said.

Kellie Appold, 45, Delores Crawford, 66, and her daughter, Ruth Ann Crawford, 36, died Sunday morning from smoke inhalation and burns.

The fire started in the first-floor living room and blocked an escape route, investigators said.

There was no evidence of smoke detectors in the home, investigators said.
