: On Thursday, Gov. Martin O'Malley signed an executive order commuting the sentence of Mark Farley Grant and a Washington, D.C., woman also serving life without parole for murder -- the first time O'Malley has used the power during his tenure.
: A few minutes before 6 p.m. Thursday, the jury, which deliberated the verdict for 18 hours over the course of three days, returned to the courtroom and the case was declared a mistrial.
: A toddler was struck by an unmarked police vehicle on the eastern edge of the Patterson Park neighborhood Thursday afternoon, officials said. Police said the victim's injuries were not life-threatening.
: State education leaders say proposed legislation that would force local school systems to continue funding a federal tutoring program could derail their efforts to gain relief from the mandates of the No Child Left Behind Act.
