: A convicted killer was found guilty Thursday of murdering a correctional officer at the now-closed Maryland House of Correction, opening the possibility that he will become the first person sentenced to death under the state's new capital punishment law.

: Hundreds from Maryland's community and independent colleges rallied in Annapolis and lobbied legislators Thursday to avert cuts in Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposed higher education spending.

: Sarah Bart, a senior at Goucher College, won again Thursday night on the "Jeopardy! College Championship" competition. It wasn't even close. She more than doubled the combined total of both of her competitors.

: The odds aren't good, but lottery officials say they're better than before. With four fewer red balls in the mix since mid-January, the odds of walking away with the whole shebang improve to 1 in 175 million from 1 in 195 million.


: With George Huguely V getting drunk on a regular basis, his University of Virginia lacrosse teammates were considering some kind of intervention in 2010, a friend testified Thursday in Charlottesville Circuit Court. But the intervention never happened.

: The state's second-highest court has rejected much of a $147 million jury verdict that was awarded to hundreds of northern Baltimore County residents whose groundwater was contaminated by a gasoline leak at an Exxon station.
