Timonium-based Riverside employs about 100 people and provides health coverage to 25,000 people enrolled in the Maryland HealthChoice program.

The university system, which includes 12 hospitals and health care facilities, has sought approval from regulators at the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to offer a Medicare Advantage plan in 2016.

Robert A. Chrencik, the Maryland system's president and chief executive officer, said the acquisition "fits well with our model to be a comprehensive health services provider to the people of Maryland and beyond."

Details of the acquisition were not released.
