The Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine has received a $50 million grant to stop the transmission of HIV from mother to child in Zambia.
The five-year grant comes from the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, a $48 billion initiative launched in 2004 by former President George W. Bush and continued by President Barack Obama.
The announcement comes as the Institute of Human Virology has reached a milestone of caring for 1 million HIV patients overseas since 2004.
The new funding will help the institute further its reach and work, said institute director Dr. Robert Gallo, also a professor of medicine.
