The University of Maryland School of Nursing announced this week it has received its largest donation ever, $5.24 million it will use to expand enrollment in its traditional bachelor's degree program.
The gift from William "Bill" and Joanne Conway, through their Bedford Falls Foundation, will enable the school to provide full scholarships to 157 students who will be called Conway Scholars.
Bill Conway is one of three founders of The Carlyle Group and remains the Washington-based private equity firm's co-CEO. Carlyle is one of the world's largest asset management firms and Forbes estimates Conway's net worth at $3 billion.
"This incredibly generous gift will help meet the acute demand for nurses in the state and the region and will allow students to receive their education through one of the country's very best nursing schools," said Dr. Jay A. Perman, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
