First Maryland flu case reported in Baltimore area

The state's first case of seasonal flu was diagnosed in an adult in the Baltimore area, health officials said Thursday.

The person, determined to have a strain of type A H1N1, was not hospitalized, according to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. No further details about the patient were provided.

This year's vaccine includes the strain diagnosed in the patient. Many people were sickened last year because the virus wasn't a good match.

The flu sickens up to 20 percent of the U.S. population every year, causing an average of more than 200,000 flu-related hospitalizations and 24,000 flu-related deaths.

Flu activity is unpredictable, but tends to peak in late December.
