Mercy uses grant to ease side effect of chemo patients

The Medi-Spa at Mercy Medical Center has won funding to make chemotherapy a little more tolerable for up to 800 women.

The $10,000 grant from Angie's Spa Cancer Foundation will go to provide free therapeutic spa services such as massage and acupuncture to uninsured and under-insured women with cancer.

The services are designed to alleviate painful side effects, provide relaxation and give patients a self-esteem boost, and Mercy was among seven hospital programs nationally to win such a grant, said Donna Chang, a nurse and Medi-Spa director.

Staff at the spa, located in the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Center at Mercy, work with doctors and others in the Institute for Care at Mercy to tailor services to each patient.
