The Maryland Athletic Club said Friday that it has sold its downtown Baltimore location to a Denver company that specializes in running upscale fitness centers.
The deal with Wellbridge, which operates 19 fitness and tennis facilities throughout the country, was completed July 1.
Wellbridge bought the Bel Air Athletic Club in 2000 and had been looking for other expansion opportunities in the area.
MAC will work with Wellbridge over the next several months to help with the transition of the gym, in the Harbor East neighborhood, to new ownership.
Wellbridge said it will continue the same quality of programs and services currently offered. Members who now have access to MAC's other facilities throughout the region will keep that benefit for the next three years.
The MAC at Harbor East opened in September 2007 and has more than 3,000 members and employees 100 people, who will keep their jobs.
MAC will continue to operate its flagship store in Timonium, which it has owned for 19 years, as well as an express gym in Hunt Valley.
