Goucher College
KENNETH K. LAM / Baltimore Sun
What surprised me most about Baltimore: I was actually warned before coming here that Baltimore was not only crime-filled but boring and kind of lame. I have been going to school around here and am a new resident to the city proper, and I have to say that I am absolutely in love with the weirdness and the closeness of this city. There is an odd, undefinable spirituality to this city that I am happy to be immersed in. Best school events: Besides the fact that Goucher celebrates National Free Empanada Day every spring, we have the excellent event at the end of every fall semester called Playworks. It brings together five short student pieces and lets other students, theater majors and beyond, run wild with them. It's a very special experience. Best non-school event: Artscape is amazing. This huge art festival in Station North just brings together all kinds of people, from the most off-the-wall performance artists to the rock fans from the '80s. The eclecticism is just beautiful. Look out for the Baltimore Rock Opera Society especially ... as if you could miss them. You don't see many parades with people in squid costumes these days. Best public transportation: The Collegetown Shuttle is great because it's free, but I've gotta say that I've grown to love MTA. It's fast, it's easy and it gets me everywhere. Best free wi-fi on campus: Goucher has wi-fi pretty much everywhere, so ... come here. If for nothing else, come for that. Best free wi-fi off campus: We haven't gotten wi-fi installed at my house yet, so I have been affectionately leeching off of the wireless at the Starbucks on St. Paul Street. Best hidden gem near school: Everybody needs to clear their schedules and go to Burger Bros. in Towson (above). This food is incredible. And I'm kind of a burger snob. Turkey burger with grilled onions, jalepenos, ketchup and mayo? Thanks, America. Best way to meet people: Just go sit outside. Look welcoming. Try to avoid having a stanky resting face. Find an acquaintance and say, "Hey, wanna go grab some lunch?" and understand that it's totally not weird to do that. Favorite on-campus place to study: Goucher has a beautiful 24-hour library/student center called the Athenaeum. It may not always be my favorite place because just being there reminds means that I have a ton of work, but I've learned to appreciate that I have somewhere to go at any time. Favorite off-campus place to study: Ukazoo Books is this awesome used bookstore in Towson. It is so relaxing for me to be surrounded by books, sipping some coffee and enjoying the fact that I'm not going to run into everybody I know. Favorite things to do on the weekend: On Saturday, I go over to the Waverly Market in the morning to buy some groceries, stop by The Book Thing to get some free stuff to add to my collection, and then relax until I can go find an interesting bar/restaurant that evening. I suggest everybody do the same. It is so relaxing. Must-take classes: Take a class with Professor Mary Marchand, who teaches American studies and English literature classes. She is a gift to the teaching world and a goddess. She will change your life. What I wish someone had told me when I was a freshman: Ask for help frequently and know that nobody thinks you're an idiot for doing so. Best hangout spot on campus: Just sitting out on the quad is such a beautiful thing. The Goucher Beach Phenomenon is such an amazing people-watching opportunity. Seriously. Just go out there and enjoy it. Best hangout spot off campus: My house? Just come on over. Or I guess Carma's Cafe in Charles Village is also pretty outstanding. What the Greek life is like: Goucher has specifically banned Greek life in our charter, and that's something I actually really like about this school. I think that it works great in other places, but I'm glad I don't have it in my life. By Craig Richie, junior, English and theatre double major

What surprised me most about Baltimore: One of the most remarkable things about Baltimore is that the people here have managed to retain the easygoing nature and sincerity that are among the best-loved qualities of-small town America without sacrificing the vibrancy and cultural gravitas characteristic of one of the greatest cities in the world. Best school events: The three days of Spring Fair are the best three days of my year, but the homecoming lacrosse game and all the fanfare that goes with it makes for a pretty great time as well. Best non-school event: I genuinely cannot narrow it down to one. My favorite experiences would be a four-way tie between Preakness, Artscape, FreeFest, and that impromptu, city-wide party that ignited when the Ravens won the Super Bowl. That was awesome. Best public transportation: The best Hopkins transportation is definitely the Homewood-JHMI shuttle. The best city transportation is the Charm City Circulator. And the best transportation to just about everywhere else you can get on public transportation is the MARC train. Best free wi-fi on campus: There's nothing quite like watching Netflix on the Beach (above). Best hidden gem near school: There is a beautiful trail along Stony Run Creek that is right behind the Homewood Campus. It's like being transported into a completely different world, and I feel as though not that many Hopkins students are familiar with it. Best way to meet people: A friend of mine just got a little beagle puppy and has seemingly met and befriended more people while walking him in Mount Vernon than I have in three years here. If you're not ready for that kind of commitment, Tuesday night trivia at PJ's Pub in Charles Village is a great alternative. Favorite on-campus place to study: I'm partial to the Brody Learning Commons. Favorite off-campus place to study: My porch. I live in a house with four friends, and when the weather's nice there's nothing better than the five of us sitting outside all day. Favorite things to do on the weekend: There are always great parties around campus, but since I turned 21 my friends and I have begun to branch out to other parts of the city. Must-take classes: If you come to Hopkins and you choose to major in neuroscience, you're going to have to take both semesters of The Nervous System. If you come to Hopkins and major in anything else, you should make the time to take both semesters of The Nervous System. These are incredible classes taught by an outstanding professor. What I wish someone had told me when I was a freshman: Ambition is like Google Maps. You can type in anything you want, and it will show you where to go. But unless you're willing to put in the work to get there, you're just staring a screen. Best hangout spot on campus: The Beach is the ideal on-campus hangout spot. Best hangout spot off campus: I have friends who live in Mount Vernon and Federal Hill, and I really like hanging out in those neighborhoods. What surprised me most about Baltimore: All the different neighborhoods and their unique characteristics. You can hang out in Hampden for Honfest and grab a cheap yet awesome dinner, or you can head down to Federal Hill to go out and grab a drink, or even Harbor East to take a date for a nice dinner. All the different neighborhoods offer something special and I'm still exploring them as a senior. Best school event: It has gotta be Loyolapalooza. They had Matt and Kim last year. Best non-school event: Artscape. There's nothing better than some free entertainment. Best public transportation: The Loyola shuttle will take you where you need to go. Best free wi-fi on campus: Starbucks. Where else? Best free wi-fi off campus: Evergreen Cafe (above). Best hidden gem near school: Pete's Grill. Best way to meet people: Hang out on the quad with a puppy. Favorite on-campus place to study: Knott Hall Favorite off-campus place to study: Evergreen Cafe, again. It's a great place to hang out and get work done. Favorite things to do on the weekend: There are great places to get away and go rafting, but if you wanna stick around the city, it's always fun to go to an O's game. Must-take class: Effective Writing with Ron Tanner. Best hangout spot on campus: Humanities porch. Best hangout spot off campus: Holy Frijoles. By Eric Michaelis, senior, business major

Jerry Jackson / Baltimore Sun
What surprised me most about Baltimore: How openly accessible Baltimore is as a city. Although it has all the benefits of an urban space such as shops and restaurants, and the diversity of culture that comes with a city, it doesn't overwhelm you like New York would with its size and complexity. It's a place that makes you feel like you can easily assimilate and call it your own. Best school events: MICA has some of the most ridiculous, craziest and most engaging school events of any college that I know of. My freshman year there was Ice Cream and Condom Night, which is exactly what it sounds like. All the free ice cream you can eat along with piles of free protection. We also have some more normal events such as the Coffee House that happens a few times a year and gives students a chance to showcase their performative talents. We also hosted a bunch of great bands such as Cults and Future Islands in an intimate performance space, which was really great. Humans Vs. Zombies also takes over campus every spring, where for two weeks students battle "zombie hordes" with Nerf guns. Best non-school event: If it's a weekend you can probably find MICA students at the Bell Foundry or a multitude of other informal venues like Holy Underground, Club K or now The Crown. Best public transportation: The Light Rail runs right through campus at the Mount Royal stop, and the Circulator is pretty close as well. But most MICA students ride bikes because it's free and usually quicker than transit. Best free wi-fi on campus: Outside at Cafe Doris there's a bunch of tables under the shade of the Brown Building (the iceberg shaped structure, above right), where you can get wi-fi signal while you drink your coffee. Best free wi-fi off campus: Bolton Deli has free wi-fi and is right next door to the freshman dorm. You can sit at their tables outside in the shade while you eat a sandwich and stay connected. Best hidden gem near school: Every year the new freshmen slowly discover the tunnel under Falls Road and the Howard Street bridge. They usually go down there to walk along the stream and take photos in the concrete tunnel that runs underneath the bridge and the train tracks. The closest gem near campus though would be the Buddha statue behind the Fox Building, where students go to relax and reflect. Best way to meet people: Since MICA is a school of only 1,600 or so, it's pretty easy to make new friends. A lot of my friendships were forged either through eating in the dining hall or sitting outside a campus building and striking up conversation. Orientation is also quite valuable, because it provides opportunities where you are forced to interact with new people. A big freshman year friendship adventure would be to ask someone to go to the Inner Harbor and go shopping. Favorite on-campus place to study: MICA students seldom have the need to study, since most of our classes are studios and the academic electives rarely give exams. In the case that we do need to cram for a test, the best place is usually the Decker Library or in Cafe Doris in one of the booths. Favorite off-campus place to study: If it's really necessary to go off campus to study, I'd recommend going to Starbucks or some other cafe. Caffeine dulls the woes of studying as much as possible. Favorite thing to do on the weekend: If there isn't a good concert going on, I'll usually be hanging out on someone's porch or rooftop relaxing. MICA is also filled with a great deal of musicians, so I'll capitalize on any opportunity to jam with someone. My fellow students also capitalize on the opportunity to sleep as much as possible, because six-hour classes, five days a week, wears you down. Saturdays are usually the time for sleeping until 1 p.m. and then getting coffee. Must-take classes: One of the most enjoyable classes I had was Modern Political Philosophy, because being a very liberal school we have some fantastic conversations about politics. It also gets veryyyyy interesting when there is that one conservative who throws the whole room into a heated hour-long debate. Masculinity was also really engaging, because it basically applies the concept of feminism to men but is taught by a woman. We had some wonderful discussions about the social stigma of male emotions and how patriarchy is rooted in a lack of self assurance. What I wish someone had told me when I was a freshman: Not to wear your ID lanyard around your neck. It not only makes you look like a dork, but it also basically paints you as a giant target for anyone looking to snatch a wallet or iPhone. Best hangout spot on campus: Everyone seems to gravitate toward Cohen Plaza. It's the perfect grassy area to lay out in the sun and forget about school work. Best hangout spot off campus: I prefer to sit in the Park Avenue park by the fountain, or sit outside at On the Hill Cafe/Bolton Deli with a coffee. Since Bolton Hill is such an intimate neighborhood you're liable to see someone you know and they'll stop and chat. What the Greek life is like: Hahaha. I can't even imagine what a MICA frat might be like, but it is fun to occasionally visit a Hopkins frat gathering. Stepping into one of the Greek houses feels like an adventure into a foreign land.
