Pop-up restaurant and bar South Point to open in Port Covington next weekend

Update July 25, 12:30 p.m.: South Point will postpone its grand opening until Aug. 11 and its first workout class until Aug. 2 due to weather concerns. South Point will be open to the public from 5 p.m.-11 p.m. on July 27 and July 28.

South Point, a pop-up open-air restaurant, bar and event space, will host its grand opening Aug. 11 on South Baltimore’s Port Covington waterfront.

Created by Weller Entertainment, South Point will open to the public from 5 p.m.-11 p.m. on July 27 and July 28, and maintain the same hours going forward on Thursdays-Saturdays, except for a private event on Aug. 10. The rest of the week it will be available by rental for corporate events, said Chip Watkins, the company’s managing director.

Weller Entertainment, a recently launched branch of Port Covington developer Weller Development, manages South Point, and plans to donate 100 percent of net proceeds from all 2018-2019 events to a different Baltimore charity or organization, according to a spokesman. Youth wellness nonprofit Mission Fit will be a partner for opening weekend.

The Baltimore Sun Media Group has a long-term lease on its printing plant at Port Covington. The building will become the newspaper’s headquarters in coming months.

Beginning Aug. 2, South Point will host two weekly workout classes: bootcamp and yoga led by Baltimore fitness company FX Well. On Thursdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m., the yoga class will take place on South Point’s waterfront while the bootcamp will be held in the surrounding West Covington Park.

The kickoff class is free for those who preregister. Each subsequent class will cost $10 and include a drink ticket for South Point, which will host a Thursday dinner theme of healthy eating.

On Fridays and Saturdays, the restaurant will offer an all-ages, pet-friendly happy hour with backyard games and music. Created by Baltimore chef Patrick Morrow, the menu will focus on South American-style barbecue, alongside a rotating cast of food trucks, the spokesman said.

Located at 101 W. Cromwell St., South Point will be open through the fall and close for the season once it’s too cold, according to a spokesman. Parking will be free.
