Ravens bar of the week: The Americana

The Americana is the Ravens bar of the week. (Kenneth K. Lam, Baltimore Sun)

Though it's been open since last fall, you might not have heard of The Americana, a handsome two-story bar and restaurant in Canton. But with its brunch menu and sports-ready clientele, Sunday's divisional game may be the time to check it out.

The Americana replaced Clutch, which ostentatiously billed itself as "Baltimore's premier sports bar," with a low-key attitude. For decor, the owners have peppered the bar with some vintage knick-knacks and framed covers of the Saturday Evening Post. The staff is attentive and well-informed, not just about the beer but the cocktails, too. Overall, it might remind some people of Fells Point's Waterfront Hotel.

The Americana has built a following with Giants fans — members of the fan group The Big Blue Wrecking Crew are regulars — but it also caters to Ravens fans. On Sunday, with both the Giants and the Ravens playing, owner Alex van Breukelen expects it to be "packed."

Drinks: The Americana has 29 beers by the bottle, including Flying Dog, Harpoon IPA and Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy, plus the usual domestics. There aren't as many drafts — just six brands, including Yuengling, Natty Boh and Stella. All beers are less than $7. On Sunday, Miller Lites are $2 all day. The bar also has a modest wine list: seven reds and six whites.

Food: The dinner menu consists of burgers, sandwiches, some vegan dishes and traditional American entrees — New York strip, pork tenderloin, etc. The bar also has a brunch menu — prices range from $9.99 (Belgian waffles) to $14.95 (crab cakes and eggs Benedict). Brunch is usually served until 2 p.m., but this Sunday it will end sooner because van Breukelen anticipates the bar will be extra crowded. On Sundays, a pound of wings is $6.50 and chicken skewers are $5.

Decor: As its name implies, the bar is going for a classic American look — both the first floor bar and the dining room upstairs are clean-cut polished. This makes it a comfortable brunch destination. The upstairs, in particular, is brightly lit. There is also an open-air terrace on the second floor that is heated during the winter. On Sunday, the Ravens game will be on all eight flat-screens, as will the Giants game that comes on later in the afternoon.

Distance from stadium: About 16 minutes by car.

Parking: On-street metered parking is available on a limited basis.
