The operator of two popular eateries on the Homewood campus of The Johns Hopkins University is opening a Venezuelan restaurant in the Can Company space that was recently home to the now-closed Soyombo Grille, BangBang Mongolian Grille and Austin Grill.

The new 90-seat restaurant, Alma Cocina Latina, is from Irena Stein, the owner-operator of Cafe Azafran in the Space Telescope Science Institute, and of Alkimia, a cafe in Gilman Hall.

Alma is scheduled for a March opening following a renovation to the interior space, according to a news release. The restaurant's menu will primarily be small plates and contemporary arepas, a kind of flat bread enjoyed throughout South America.

Unlike Alkimia and Cafe Azafran, which are mainly daytime operations, Alma will operate as a full-service restaurant, licensed to sell beer, wine and alcohol. It will be open daily for lunch and dinner.
