Last week, Union Craft Brewing knocked another milestone off its bucket list when it released its first-ever seasonal can, the German-style sour ale Old Pro Gose.
"It's really exciting. Old Pro is a beer we've been brewing since our first year, and we've always talked about putting it in cans," Kevin Blodger, co-founder and head brewer at the Woodberry company, said late last week.
Cans are available at locations that normally carry Union products, Blodger said. Bars selling Old Pro Gose cans include Max's Taphouse and La Cuchara. For those looking to drink it at home, liquor stores like Lighthouse Liquors and The Wine Source are selling it.
Old Pro Gose is predictably tart but also has noticeable notes of salt and coriander. In 2014, it won a Silver medal at Denver's Great American Beer Festival. For Blodger, Union's take on Gose is an ideal beer for the outdoors and warm weather.
"It's a beer we're really proud of, and more than anything, it's a beer we love to drink in the summer," Blodger said.
More seasonal cans will follow, but the next beer has not been chosen yet, he said.
Union will celebrate its three-year anniversary at its brewery on July 25. Expect rare drafts, cask beers, food trucks and live music by local acts Brooks Long & The Mad Dog No Good and Bosley. For more information or to buy tickets, visit MissionTix.
Blodger sounded energized by the can's release and other upcoming plans, like Union entering the northern Virginia market soon. The brewery's tasting room has been expanded, and outdoor seating is also a new addition. In the near future, Blodger said the plan is to keep pushing Union forward.
"We're brewing more beer than ever," he said.
